Media Create Co. said this week that the PSP sold 26,281 units between June 6 and June 12 to rank as the No. 1 game hardware for the week. Sales for Sony Corp.’s PSP edged above Nintendo Co.’s Nintendo 3DS handheld in the latest retail figures from Japan.
The PSP sold 69 units go to rank No. 10 for the week.
The PSP ranked three titles in the top 10, including Acquire Corp.’s Akiba’s Trip at No. 8 and Patapon 3 at No. 10.
The Nintendo 3DS sold 24,649 units to rank as the No. 2 hardware for the week. The 3DS ranked two titles in the top 10, Capcom Co.’s Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D at No. 2 with 15,551 units sold and One Piece: Unlimited Cruise SP at No. 8 with 5,523.
Meanwhile, the Nintendo DSi LL sold 5,283 units to rank No. 5, the Nintendo DSi sold 5,232 to rank No. 6, and the DS Lite sold 146 units to rank No. 9 in the same period.
Nintendo in April, said 3DS Nintendo sold 3.61 million at the end of the fiscal year in March, down from the company’s four million unit projection.
The Nintendo 3DS handheld began sale in the U.S. March 27 at $249.99. Nintendo 3DS includes 3-D technology to show that does not require special glasses.
The PSVita will include the dual analog sticks, a 5-inch multi-touch OLED display, 3G & GPS, front and rear touch panels, and a compass on three axes. It will utilize flash-memory game cards.
Hardware specifications include an ARM Cortex A9 4-core CPU, front camera, rear camera, built-in microphone and Bluetooth 2.1.
In May Sony began sale of the Limited Edition PSP Entertainment Pack, which includes the device for PSP-3000, 2GB Memory Stick Pro, Gran Turismo, and MLB 11 The Show at $199.99.
The company will partner with AT&T to allow current customers to access Wi-Fi hotspots nationwide. The PSVita Party mode will allow users to chat with nearby owners. In addition, near will allow users to play with friends using their PSN ID. The Wi-Fi only model will sell at $249.99. The 3G model will sell at $299.99.
